View Full Version : Good example of a max snatch

I thought it might be nice to post a recent snatch that is, in my opinion, a pretty technically good lift. The hips are a little higher than I woujld like coming off the ground, but, this is how Jon tends to get when the weights get heavy, and he makes the lift, so I cant really argue. Just to give you an idea of how nice a lift this is, this is a 150kg snatch by a guy that front squats only about 180kg... when you are that efficient, as a coach, its hard to gripe too much about technique. Technique is, after all, just getting the most out of your strength levels that you can...

Is he 94 kg ?

He is, but that video is pretty old.
He has snatched 166kg (I think) in training now

Thanks. I like his style and attitude. It be cool to see him in WC soon.
OMG. Another crash in TdFrance. Been 1+ each day. Those guys have almost attitude issues
Is he doing specific work to bring up his front squat right now? That's awesome efficiency, it'd be great to see what he could do with a 210-220kg front squat!

Am I living in a time warp or something?
This is Jon North, surely someone else except me has seen him lifting in the 2 years since this video??
He has since front squatted 230, iirc

I knew he has done like 210, but didn't know about 230
Anyways, Jons big weakness (well if you can call it that, I would gladly swap places with him in regards to weightlifting) are his jerks anyways.

Pretty sure he did 227 on a livestream where there was a few hundred dollars on the line. At the time Glenn said he best back squat was 240, I believe.
I also remember the 227.5kg front squat video.

So if I snatch 100kg in the same session that I miss a 120kg front squat, does that mean I'm efficient?

That would mean you have insane hip power and speed. If this is the case, you would be successful in weightlifting better than most elite weightlifters nowadays. Also depends why you missed the 120kg front squat. If it was a leg strength issue than I would be amazed if I saw that 100kg snatch.

To be honest, I did make the 120 front squat on tuesday but on thursday I failed it.
I snatched 100 on tuesday and attempted 105 but I didn't pull it high enough - Felt like I caught it on bent arms. Then on thursday I made the 100 snatch on the 3rd attempt, went for a 120kg clean, caught it solid and couldn't squat it back up lol. Then tried to front squat 120 and failed.

I'm not sure that method of determining efficiency always applies when the numbers are lower (I can't explain why though), I have snatched 90 and cleaned 110 with a 110 front squat but I would not consider myself very efficient and definately don't have insane hip power and speed!

Efficient? Yes.
Weak legs? Hell yes.
I'd also tell you efficiency doesn't win competition and the guy with not bad form but can FS 180kg is going to crush your 100kg Sn and he will for sure steam roll your CJ. You will be dam lucky to CJ 120 the session you Sn 100 and fail to FS 120...

That's still very impressive to me. I have to see a video of the lifts to really see why this is the case. It would be really interesting to see.

What about your deadift? I sn 105 and c&j 125 with a f sq of 130. Back squat is also 130 and this is with reasonable squatting work. But I discovered I could clean grip deadlift 180 without any training.

This is possible. Interestingly, this isn't always the case. This would mean that your snatch deadlift is in the 160 range. Which could possibly explain why you snatch 105 assuming you have an above average 2nd pull. My biggest weakness is my pull off the floor. My max pull from the floor is only 10-15kg more on both lifts without straps, only hook.

Interesting. Everyone that has mentioned numbers is by % more efficient then m...but I have one of the bigger lift numbers...
One of the most efficient guys I know Sn 105-107 CJ 120 and can on only FS 120x3 but has recently pushed it to 125x3. The efficient Sn is all well and good but the relatively low FS numbers will hurt him hugely on his CJ either way you cut it.
I think the most efficient would be the guy that can barely FS 160 on a given sesssion (PB is 165) and can hit Sn 132.5 and PC 150...very very fast and powerful guy but with relatively weak legs.
It's easier to be more efficient when you can't squat chunks over 160+.
Looks like the peole with weak quads have reasonably high DL numbers. My DL numbers are low.

Cool. Based on your numbers, it is telling me you have insane speed under the bar or a massive second pull. With such a low front squat, it's very difficult to get much height on the bar. Few athletes can actually do it. Rob Blackwell barely gets the bar off the ground but his second pull is enormous. I believe he snatches 80% of his front squat on a good day, which is unheard of. Just by the numbers he seems to be more efficient than john north.

150 isn't impossible to FS. You will have to prioritize it an focus on it to improve it though. If you don't have a plan of action you won't get your squats up.
Yeah I'd rib Dave *disco* on his lifting and sh!t. Brunel is cool. Bobby and Kristian train there and I've started to train there in the summer as well. Come down mate.

well in terms of efficiency?

It means you should steam roll the efficiency guys when it comes to the CJ phase. If they can barely FS 120, chances are they aren't going to CJ 130kg and you should definitely be able to CJ 130-135-140 at the very minimum.
No points for efficiency in competition guys.

His best 3RM FS is 125. He will struggle to CJ 125 in a comp as he has to 3 Sn before it. If he adds 5-10kg more it'll help him immensely. I told him there is no reason why he can't triple 140 before the year is over if he focuses on it.

Funnily enough, yesterday I front squatted 120 for five doubles lol. I felt wrecked today though because of it.
Also, I checked out Brunel yesterday afternoon... It looks so nice. I'm used to training with one platform, one weightlifting bar and recently the heaviest plates we have are 15's  and to top it off, the platform was overed in talc yesterday as well. What times do you normally train?
