View Full Version : Missing snatches out front; jumping too far back?

Recently I've been missing a lot of lifts out front on heavy (to me at least) snatches. I've noticed that as the weight gets heavier I usually jump back further, and the bar stays out front.
Everett's books suggests a cue to drive the heels forward into the floor; I try this in the last two snatches in the video below. Are there other things I can work on?

130lbs (59kg)
135 (61)
145x (66) Here's where I start jumping back more
Missed 145 again not on video
140 (63.6) went down and worked my way back up to 140
145x
145x
145x Using heels forward into ground cue, almost had it
135 Using heels cue again

Bodyweight 67kg
Best Snatch is 145lbs

Going to my first competition next Saturday; pretty excited.
Any critique/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'll be interested in what is said about this, as I seem to have the same problem lately.

Usually (and certainly in your case) the damage is done by the time you get the bar to your knees.

look closely and notice that your weight is more towards your toes (when the bar is at your knees) on your misses.

Fix this, and you will have fixed your problem.

Thanks Mr. Pendlay, I really appreciate you taking time to help out novices like myself.
I posted the below on the bodybuilding.com thread as well but I thought maybe texaslifter or others might be interested in seeing it here.

Today I did a lot of work with 115lbs/52kg trying to focus on getting back onto the heels like you said (did a few SnDead -> Snatch), then worked up to 135lbs/61kg. Also using the cue to drive heels forward into the floor when receiving as that seemed to help on my last attempt in my last video.

Here's a few lifts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBmWHO3UD0c

115 (lbs)
115x -- haven't missed one behind in a long time, this one caught me by surprise
115
125
135

I'm not jumping back as far and when I receive the bar its feeling much more stable on the heels. Still need to work on it. Haven't videotaped myself from this angle in a long time, it looks like I do some premature arm bending

So much to work on, but that's one of the reasons I enjoy this sport.

that seems to be a much better job of getting back on your heels. Good job.
